Thesis ProposalAbstractAbstractThis thesis aims to describe press depictions of the increased Colombian immigration to Ecuador in six major newspapers of the region. The study will compare and contrast three Ecuadorian and three Colombian newspapers -El Comercio El Extra El Universo and El Tiempo El Espectador El Portafolio. In doing so this research attempts, through content and discourse analysis, to analyze how these publications represent Colombian migration.Engaging with Stuart Hall's representation theory Van Dijk's elite and racism discourse concepts and Cohen's moral panic view, this research aims to explore the image of Colombian immigrants in the press. At the same time, the spiral of silence theory and the concept of social representations will help to understand why immigrants allow press majoritarian voices to reproduce generalized meanings about them. Finally, a conclusive chapter will suggest some alternatives to improve those narratives.Given the above, this study will be a practical and theoretical tool that aims to find reliable evidence to support a forceful critique to the shortcomings of the journalistic practices of some Ecuadorian and Colombian newspapers. On that respect, the study attempts to become a feasible reference in Latin America to claim a more socially responsible' and balanced journalism when depicting immigrants and other minorities such as women, indigenous populations and gay people in the newspapers of the region.Statement of PurposeMedia discourses and their portrayal of immigrants set a precedent that explains the environment in which migrants as newcomers- are going to live. As stated by King and Wood (2001) "Media images of the migrants may be crucial in determining the type of reception they are accorded and hence the degree of social inclusion or exclusion they are likely to achieve"(p.viii). In light of the above, this thesis attempts to explain Colombian immigration depictions in six high-circulation newspapers in Ecuador and Colombia. In that respect, the study will compare and contrast press depictions of three Colombian newspapers with three Ecuadorian newspapers. This contrast and comparison...
