The French and Indian War was a financially costly battle that resulted in the British government placing heavy taxes to help pay off the war debt. One unjust tax that took action was the Sugar Act. The Sugar Act placed a duty on sugar imported into the colonies Boston was especially vocal in response to the sugar tax, the town meeting proposed a boycott of certain English imports, (OOM 175). By boycotting the items that were being taxed, the colonists showed the British government their unwillingness to go along with an unfair act, especially because the colonists were being taxed without proper consent. The British did not take the settlers opinions into account when they began the taxation, which was a major factor in leading to the Revolutionary War. Another unfair tax that was created to pay for British debt was the Stamp Act. A Law passed by Parliament in 1765 to raise revenue in America by requiring taxed, stamped paper for legal documents, publications, and playing cards, (OOM 176). This was the first direct tax placed on the colonists, and they were discontent with it because the merchants were no longer paying for the taxes, and it was created to make a profit instead of for trading purposes. Also, like the Sugar Act, the colonists resented the fact that they were being taxed without representation, so they created pamphlets and signed petitions to get the tax revoked. These acts were the early stages of rebellion against the Crown and show the desire they had for their voices to be heard. ...
