In the video titled, Pidgins, co-producer Marlene Booth decided to focus on the Pidgin language because that language made one of her close friends whole again. Pidgin is not only the language of Hawaii, but today immigrants from China, Japan, and Philippines. She discovered that Pidgin speakers were very reluctant when asked to appear on camera. The languages of the heart is used to describe this soulful language, which is why many refused to speak on camera for posterity. At the time when plantations began in Hawaii, the majority of the people spoke English. Making it very difficult for this group of people to communicate with immigrants. The only way that they could communicate would be to find whatever English they would understand. For example, if a Japanese immigrant and a Portuguese immigrant tried to communicate to each other they would use the few English they know but would include features from their own first language. It is said that thats how the language of Pidgin began to spread around Hawaii. Lee Tonouchi, a poet, was introduced into the film as a Pidgin activist. In school, people would tell him that he would write how he would speak. He asked if it was a good thing but individuals would tell him that it was a bad thing instead. Tonouchi stated that it was ironic for his grandmother to tell him that he should not speak Pidgin, but she would be the one teaching it to him. Something that I found very interesting when watching this documentary was that in the 1920s the English Standard Schools required students to pass an oral examination in order to be accepted to the school. Ellen Tamuera, a professor, stated that parents who came from the mainland had a lot of pressure from these schools, they did not like the language that was being spoken in school.
