Are the foods introduced into our society safe? In more than sixty countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union (EU), there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs.(Non GMO Project pr. 12).The United States, not being one of the countries that has a ban, allows the sale of GMOs all over the country. Since retail is permitted, more individuals are becoming aware of the information, while Americans are still misled everyday into buying non-labeled GMOs (genetically modified organisms). More than half of the products seen on shelves in the US at the grocery store contain GMOs, it is now present in 75 to 80 percent of conventional processed food in the U.S.(Grocery Manufacturers Association). Due to the alteration of genetics in these plants and animals, the appearance is far-fetched from reality. This harms not only humans, but the environment has also been suffering. The restrictions and bans on genetically modified organisms vary around the world. The European Union takes the subject very seriously having, ...probably the strictest regulations from the rest of the world (Davison). All new food in Europe including irradiated food, undergoes extensive food evaluation and is always a target for the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority). Every country also has differences in what they ban and allow to be sold. Germany, for instance, announced an immediate stop of cultivation and marketing of MON 810 maize under the safeguard clause. A genetically modified plant that has the MON 810 gene is made by inserting a protein into the DNA structure that kills bugs that try to eat it. This prevents a large loss of crops due to insect infestation. This gene modification was first approved in the EU in 1998, and since then more than 5 countries have stopped growing with the GMOs.
