Bilingualism is the ability that people have to speak more than one language. For example, a person who speaks English and Spanish is considered bilingual. In 2006, the European Commission conducted a survey that showed that 56 percent of respondents could speak other language than their native one (Marian and Shook). However, there were other countries that had a higher percentage. For example, over a 90 percent of Luxembourgers and Latvians were bilingual (Marian and Shook). Jobs, society, and cognitive areas are zones where bilingual benefits are present. Positive effects of bilingualism can be found in jobs. People who speak more than one language will always have more opportunities. A place where bilingual people can have many benefits is in a job. For example, they can be hired in many areas specially in places like companies that are associated with people that speak another language. This is fantastic for polyglots (people who have the knowledge of several languages) because they can get high positions and earn a lot of money at the same time, which is great. Also, bilingual people have the privilege to travel to other countries, and work for international companies. For instance, Apple is an international company that has bilingual employees for a best customer service. Like jobs, there are other areas where bilinguals can have many benefits. Society is another section where advantages are found for bilinguals. Polyglot people do not necessary have to work to see the benefits they have because of their knowledge of two different languages. In culture, multilingual people have many rewards for example, they can learn about two traditions, be less discriminated, more tolerated for others, and watch movies in two different languages and understand what the characters are saying. Bilingual people also have many benefits on traveling.
