Despite the dominance of male screen time in films, even in Eastwoods films, Clint Eastwood creates and emphasises incredible and strong female characters throughout his films. Their strengths range from physical to mental and psychological. This will be shown through an analysis of Maggie Fitzgerald (Million Dollar Baby), Sue, (Gran Torino), and Francesca Johnson (Bridges of Maddison County).Maggie Fitzgerald, from Million Dollar Baby, was a tough woman in her 30s, who was training to be a boxer. One day she goes into Frankie Dunns gym, and she just never stops going day by day. Frankie and a few of the men at the gym constantly put her down, but she never gives up. She has a true sense of grit and determination (which is rather lax within the film industry, as females are usually portrayed as weak, fickle and dependent). Maggies strength and character shows through very early in the movie specifically with her persistence in training. Her strength proves to be not only physical (which is obvious), but mental as well. As the story unfolds, we learn that she has had to be strong her whole life. She had to support her mother and other family members and she got sick of their lack of determination, so she left and swore to look after herself and to not be dependent on her family ever again and she kept that promise to herself. In Maggies last fight, Frankie continues to put her down. He says Shes a better fighter than you are, thats why. Shes younger, shes stronger, and shes more experienced. Now, whatre you gonna do about it? Maggie responds to this by knocking her opponent out. She proves Frankie and everyone who ever doubted her such as Shawrelle Berry wrong. Notwithstanding these strong aspects of the lead females character, she allows herself to change. She allows herself to become dependent on Frankie. She relies on him for training, but also...
