Career Essay Writing Tips and Examples

What is a career essay? It is a laconic piece of writing about a job that you are getting trained for. Alternatively, you can write a career essay about a job or even a particular position that you are interested in. When you are writing a career essay, it is easy to get tempted and go into too much detail, but this is a wrong approach. As we have mentioned, a career essay is supposed to be a laconic piece, so it is critical that you stick to the point and write only about particular job opportunities, the skills you apply and the benefits you receive, as well as the potential for your professional growth.

Here is how you put together a career essay:

  • STEP 1 - Introduction. The main thing that you need to remember is that a career essay is not a biography or a CV, so there is no need to include any information that does not directly relate to the career about which you are writing. What you do include here is a few sentences to describe the career in question and the reason why it attracts your attention. It is also an excellent idea to connect this career to yourself by mentioning particular skills that you possess and that are needed for this job.
  • STEP 2 – Main Body. Since a career essay has to be laconic, it is best that you have no more than three paragraphs in the main body of your essay. Each of these paragraphs will focus on a particular reason why you are interested in this career. These may include the importance of this job for the community, the duties within the job description, and the professional growth opportunities. Usually, each paragraph consists of up to five sentences.
  • STEP 3 - Conclusion. The essential function of the conclusion of any essay is to leave the reader with a good impression upon reading. With career essays, you may write about how getting this particular job would fulfill your aspirations in the short term. Them you can continue by how mutually beneficial it will be for the organization, the community, and yourself, as you will be performing this job in the long run. Mind that the conclusion must not be too lengthy. It is best if you manage to fit it all in one paragraph of two sentences.
  • STEP 4 - Proofreading and editing. When you re-read your draft, your main focus should be to make sure that your essay sticks to the point and does not go into unnecessary detail. It may be an excellent idea to have a friend look through your essay and tell you which parts can be left out and which can be expanded upon.
