Brazil IndonesiaBrazils background is rough, so there are a few very important and sensitive topics among Brazilians. Brazil is very diverse, natives to Brazil range from Japanese to Portuguese, and German to Egyptian. If you do not get to know the cultural background of the people you are interacting with, it makes it very difficult to communicate to natives without it resulting in unsuccessful communication, which then leads to frustration and adds to culture shock. The slippery slope of the matter is all too real when dealing with actual human beings. One thing that interested me in the readings is the Typical Day in Cairo scenario. When first reading the expats point of view, it seems as if Egypt is a bribing, untrustworthy, unreliable country. Because the expat could not understand the culture around her, it made it very difficult to tolerate the locals. The same principle applies anywhere. To avoid culture shock in Brazil, it is best to educate myself on the origins and language of those I will be around. Not only that, but following the customs instead of doing my own thing will prevent offending natives which will help alleviate the stress of dealing with culture shock. There is not much preparing that can be done to help prepare for country shock in Brazil. If I were going to be staying for an extended period of time, Storti says to stay in contact with friends and family. Because I personally wont be gone long, this step is not necessary. The best thing to do is try to stay healthy and get lots of rest (as much as possible), do not seclude myself from the locals because that will only add to culture shock, and keep the big picture in mind.
